Early Years and Family History: Meena Keshwar Kamal was born into a progressive family in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her father, Muhammad Bashir, was a public servant, and her mother, Fahima, was a homemaker who encouraged education. Meena was exposed to the political and social issues of her country from an early age, which shaped her awareness and commitment to activism.
Education and Early Activism: Meena attended Malalai High School in Kabul, where she demonstrated exceptional academic ability and a passion for social justice. After high school, she enrolled at Kabul University, where she studied Law and Political Science. It was during her time at university that Meena became actively involved in political activism, particularly focusing on women’s rights.
Marriage and Personal Life: In 1976, Meena married Faiz Ahmad, the founder of the Maoist organization Afghan Liberation Organization (ALO). The couple had three children. Faiz Ahmad was a significant influence on Meena’s political ideology, and together they worked towards their shared goal of a free and democratic Afghanistan.
Political Turmoil and Hardships: The late 1970s and 1980s were a period of great political turmoil in Afghanistan. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the subsequent rise of Islamist factions created a dangerous environment for activists like Meena. Despite the risks, she continued her work with RAWA, organizing protests, publishing a magazine called “Payam-e-Zan” (Women’s Message), and running underground schools and clinics.
Tragic End and Legacy: Meena’s activism made her a target for both the Soviet forces and Islamist extremists. On February 4, 1987, Meena was assassinated in Quetta, Pakistan, by agents suspected to be linked to the Afghan secret police (KHAD) and fundamentalist Mujahideen factions. She was only 30 years old.
