Tom is the son of Mary Morello, a schoolteacher of Irish-Italian heritage, and Ngethe Njoroge, a Kenyan Kikuyu Mau Mau activist, and Kenya’s first UN ambassador. His paternal lineage includes leaders like great-uncle President Jomo Kenyatta.  Raised in Libertyville, Illinois, he discovered music and activism early, absorbing his family’s legacy of resistance and equality.

He attended Harvard University, earning a B.A. in Social Studies, where he practiced guitar for hours in his dorm stairwell. In the mid‑80s, he played with Lock Up, releasing Something Bitchin’ This Way Comes (1989) before meeting Zack de la Rocha and forming Rage Against the Machine in 1991.
